There was nothing better than seeing live music at these great smaller clubs that are no longer there. None of these venues operate on a daily or even weekly basis, but back in 1967 when the music really started to explode, the many small clubs were open at least on the weekend. The Tower Theater is still a great place to see a concert as is the Keswick Theater. A new Electric Factory is now in operation in a different location and features acts that don’t have enough of a following to pack the big venues. Ironically, what comes around goes around and all of the big venues from that time frame also are no longer there. With the advent of the large venues like the Spectrum, JFK Stadium and the Veterans stadium, the smaller clubs dried up. In fact, the only one left is The Theater of the Living Arts now known as the TLA. It's a short walk from novel drinking spots like Barcade, which combines classic arcade games with a full service bar. The Fillmore’s location in Fishtown places it across the street from parlor games at SugarHouse Casino. Hit makers in genres from hip-hop to country music frequently do shows at the 2500-capacity Fillmore or its smaller adjoining venue, The Foundry. Only three years old, The Fillmore has quickly become one of Philadelphia’s go-to venues for great music. Because of the Trocadero’s age, the building feels like it is shaking during frenzied shows. Meanwhile, indie songwriters like Gus Dapperton and up-and-coming hip-hop artists like Saba perform at the Trocadero Balcony, giving audiences the chance to see the stars of tomorrow. With a neon red sign and finely aging architecture, the Trocadero has the look and feel of a living landmark (it’s listed on the US Register of Historic Places). Located in the heart of Philadelphia’s Chinatown, the Trocadero regularly features major musical acts. Opened in 1870, the Trocadero is the only 19th-century Victorian theater still operating in the USA.
